The New Facebook Chat ‘Messenger’ : An Overview
If you are on facebook, you probably noticed that their chat function recently changed. It used to show the people you chose, and now it shows the people facebook chooses for you. You’re probably wondering why this changed.
Here’s the answer: Facebook logs every interaction you have with another person. Every time you post a comment on your friend’s status or photo, every time you’re tagged in the same picture as them, every time you look at their profile, facebook automatically lists you as a little closer to that person, assuming if you interact a lot you probably know each other. This is a reasonable assumption to make. Your news feed mostly shows people you interact with a lot, and when you type a friend’s name in the people facebook thinks you know best show up first. With the new chat system, the same filtering applies.
Syncing Data to Apple’s iCloud
In conjunction with the upcoming release of Apple’s iOS 5, iCloud is a much anticipated program. For quite a while, there has been much discussion and work in regards to cloud technology. This basically is giving users the ability to sync, backup and share data across multiple devices and without the need to connect to a computer. There are programs currently available that offer such services, but there is none that would be as all encompassing as iCloud.
One of the main selling features of iCloud would be the fact that users can access the service for free. Initially when people sign up for the service, 5 GB is available for use. Additional storage can be purchased for a nominal fee. This is most likely going to be an annual fee. For the average user, 5 GB should be more than sufficient to start.
While there is much speculation as to what will be included in iOS 5 and the specifics of iCloud, everyone will need to wait until this fall to know for certain what Apple has in store for users. In the mean time, users will just need to wait and read all of the interesting leaks and speculations that are out there. Learn more about iCloud.
